County Music Lessons

Country music doesn't just teach us about drinking, fighting, and hard partying. It also teaches some of the finer things about life — making memories, loving one another, learning from the past, and making a difference in this world we share.

So, it's no coincidence that my lens, Top 10 Personal Growth Songs That Inspire, contains mostly country music videos.

Martina McBride has probably my favorite of all on the list. Her For These Times melts my heart; the video shows a young woman with a sketch pad walking the crowded streets of New York. She asks the people in the streets what their hopes are for the future, and offers them a marker to write down on the pad what their wishes are. ...The people write from the heart as Martina sings in her beautiful, sweet voice.

Another favorite from the lens is Letter To Me, from Brad Paisley. Every time I hear this song, I wish fervently that teenagers and younger folks will grasp the enormity of the message and thereby make the choices in their lives that will make them grow up thankful for the blessing and teachings of such a song. Truly inspirational. (As embedding is disallowed, click here to see the video, in which Brad filmed in his high school and town along with his old classmates...)

Dolly Parton has such a beautiful voice, and is such a positive person, from my perception of her, that I would be remiss if I didn't mention her Better Get To Livin'. She sings about something we all experience, that of feeling beaten down and not knowing where to turn. She pushes us to take charge of our own lives and do some giving, and loving, and being! "Healing has to start with you." Such powerful words, and such a needed reminder that sweating the small stuff can overtake us and drown out the big picture.

I hope you enjoy this Saturday, and "don't waste one minute of this life."
